Shattered Dreams: God’s Unexpected Path to Joy – Review
In my life I have read few books which have impacted me more than Shattered Dreams: God's Unexpected Path to Joy by Larry Crabb. This is a powerful, challenging and at times difficult book to read, but if God uses it in your life as He has mine, it will be well worth it. I have been going through a particularly difficult time over the past year. The struggles and pain I have experienced combined with God's silence (which at times felt like absence) left me doubting God. For the first time in my life I questioned God's goodness and power. A friend challenged me to look at my situation from a different perspective, a challenge I nearly dismissed. A few weeks later I saw this book on the shelf at the church bookstore. Larry Crabb took my friends challenge, explained and expanded it, and drove it into my heart.
Shattered Dreams uses many personal stories and illustrations in addition to the story of Naomi in the book of Ruth to help the reader better understand what God is doing when the world crashes down around us. Not sensing God's presence does not mean He is absent. And when God does nothing to alleviate our pain doesn't mean He is powerless or un-loving. In fact sometimes the most loving thing a parent can do is not rescue his or her child and make it all better.
I was incredibly moved by the assertion that whatever pain we are experiencing in our circumstance, Jesus is experiencing too. But Jesus is feeling not just our pain, He is feeling the pain of all His children. So why does He allow us to hurt and suffer if He is suffering along with us? No spoilers. You really need to read this book. Read the whole book, don't give up when it gets hard to keep reading. You will not regret pushing through.
The Lord is using Shattered Dreams in a very powerful way in my life. I have regained my joy in Christ. I am still in terrible pain. I still suffer, but now I suffer with a joy those without Christ could never understand.
